Hello!

May is welcomed with Spring in all areas of the country. In addition to new green sprouts and flowers, Spring brings a new variety of food choices. The rapidly growing movement of eating locally and seasonally provides that natural variety that we all long for in our diet. This time of year brings asparagus, artichokes, fava beans, spring green garlic, fennel, leeks, beets and the beginning of the strawberry season. Enjoy the bounty!

A great way to jump-start and prepare our bodies for this change is to complete a good Detoxification program. If you haven't done a Spring detoxification yet, contact me for information and direction.

This month's issue will address weight-loss and maintenance. There has been a lot in the media about this lately and I want to "weigh-in" with an opinion. There is also an article addressing nutritional support during cancer treatment, as well as some recent research jewels for cancer prevention. And, I've done something a little different this time. I'm sharing with you a very personal journey in the article about the Hoffman Process. If you recognize that you may have some patterns that are keeping you stuck and perhaps preventing you from making those changes that you've been longing to make in your life, this may be just the article for you. It changed my life.

Cancer: Treatment and Prevention Stop Dieting! The Healing Journey Inward

Stop Dieting!

There have been a number of articles in the media recently quoting a recent study, or I should say, "meta-analysis" concluding that most people who lose weight, gain it all back. I'm not sure why such a "meta-analysis" is getting so much visibility, except perhaps to make the more invasive surgical option look more appealing.

Although certainly, gaining back the same weight over and over again is a common problem, many people have lost weight and maintained a healthy body weight and composition permanently. The problem as I see it is most programs focus on the weight-loss portion of the equation. In fact, many diets typically focus on the losing, not the maintaining.

Ironically, the first step to successful weight loss (and that means keeping the excess weight off) is to stop dieting! That's right. Stop dieting. The first clue you have as to whether or not you'll maintain the weight loss is to ask yourself, "Can I eat this way the rest of my life?" If the answer is no, then you simply will not maintain the weight-loss. A successful program is an eating plan that promotes all aspects of health, and is something you can see yourself doing forever. Now, of course, the level of strictness changes when we move from active weight- loss to maintaining, but the food plan should be basically the same. So if you are on a diet that's all about how quickly you can drop weight, and you can't imagine eating this way forever, then stop right now. Why? Because yo-yo dieting, cycles of losing and gaining, just makes the problem worse ---much worse!

In fact, every time we lose weight, even if we do so slowly, we lose some muscle with the fat loss. But when we gain it back, we gain back 100% fat. That means that at the same number of pounds on the scale, we are continually raising our body fat content with each cycle. So for example, the initial 180 pounds may have represented 36% body fat, but each time weight is lost and gained, the percentage of body fat at the same 180 pounds is going up. What does that mean? It means it gets harder and harder to lose it. Our metabolic rate goes down as body fat percentage goes up. The metabolic rate is the amount of calories we burn as we go about doing our daily activities. Another way of looking at this is that the fatter we get, the less calories we need to maintain our body weight. Can you see the cruel and vicious cycle that gets created?

Again, I want to say, many people have maintained their weight loss success for years, and forever. But there are certain principles that insure that success. There are a number of proven tips and techniques that help make the "keeping it off" much more successful. It turns out it's all about that metabolic rate I mentioned. Keeping the metabolic rate up, that is, our calorie and fat-burning mechanisms, is the key to long-term success. Here are just a few of those tips:

1) Number One has to be aerobic exercise. Regular exercise, best if it's daily, is a must for maintaining weight loss. It has to be a life-long commitment.
2) Don't skip meals, and start with a good breakfast.
3) Lose weight slowly to protect muscle mass and metabolic rate. And, working a program longer, over time, gives us the tools for moderating ourselves in the maintenance program.
4) Drinking water helps boost metabolic rate, while alcohol reduces it.
5) Extremely low-calorie diets do just that- teach your body to survive on a very small amount of calories -ugh! (Think evolution over eons here)
6) Weight-training, in addition to aerobic exercise is a metabolism booster.
7) Sleep deprivation lowers metabolic rate. And, by the way increases appetite. 45 % of Americans suffer from sleep deprivation. Could this be working against you?
8) Certain vitamins and adequate protein consumption are metabolism boosters.
9) Keeping it off means always watching what you eat even after reaching your goals. Become friendly with the scale and stay aware.
10) Remember, as appealing as the latest diet fad may sound, don't listen! Such diets are generally unhealthy and ultimately demoralizing.

If you are having trouble losing weight, or maintaining weight loss, there are a number of clues we could look for. Certain blood tests can give us information about how well your body processes carbohydrates, or whether you have" false-fat", that is, toxic build-up or inflammation that can interfere with weight loss. Thyroid dysfunction, or a sluggish thyroid, exhausted adrenal glands, poor digestion or food allergies are just some of the many causes that may be challenging you. I can help you decipher where the challenge may be and how to address it. Regardless of what the newspapers say, there are many people walking around that have made it happen and are continuing to be successful.

The Healing Journey Inward

Earlier this year I participated in a program called the Hoffman Quadrinity Process. As someone who has been on a path of personal growth and self-discovery for many years, this particular experience was profound for me.

I returned from the Process to my same life, but I felt different in it. I could best describe it as an inner journey. The Process takes one on an emotional journey, back to our earliest experiences, and through a series of well-structured experiential exercises, I was brought closer to my true self. I think this work is unique compared to other work I have done because it is not just an intellectual experience, but an emotional journey as well.

I can say that a profound result of the Process was that I fell in love with myself in a very real and deep way. That has, of course, allowed me to connect with and love others in an equally deep way. I feel more creative, present, grateful, peaceful and loving. I am also much more in touch with my true feelings and my spiritual self. I experienced it as a profound healing experience for myself and for each of the people who went through the Process with me.

I feel so strongly about the Process that I decided to share my personal experience with all of you. My work in the world is to help facilitate healing for myself and for others, and this program is one of the great tools to help accomplish just that. If you have done the Process and are a client of mine, please be sure to let me know because I truly believe it will greatly accelerate our work together.

The Process is an eight-day experiential residential program held in northern California and in sites all over the world. It was founded in 1967, and to date, more than 80,000 people across the world have benefited from it. Check out the website www.hoffmaninstitute.org and see if you are drawn to it.

I think it has the potential to help create peace in the world - one person at a time.

Cancer: Treatment and Prevention

Traditional cancer treatment with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery is very well supported with complementary medicine. That support begins with an anti-inflammatory diet that can support a strong, healthy immune system. In addition, certain supplements can help decrease severity or even eliminate side effects including those causing digestive disturbances, fatigue, weight-loss, depressed mood and memory loss. And, it's also important to know there are certain supplements that don't mix well with some cancer treatments. Please be in touch if I can help you support your body through your cancer treatment. Please contact me for an appointment.

Here are a few tidbits showing up in the recent research about cancer prevention:

A number of very interesting studies are coming out about Vitamin D3. Research indicates that people with the highest blood levels have the lowest levels of pancreatic, breast and a number of other cancers.

SPICY foods contain powerful painkillers, decrease inflammation, support a healthy immune system and decrease cancer cell growth. Here, we're talking about capsicum, the active ingredient in chilies; turmeric, the active ingredient in curcumin; and also garlic, ginger, cilantro, cloves and cinnamon.

Those with the highest consumption of fiber, about 30 grams per day, have the lowest incidence of breast and colon cancers.

Lifetime exposure to estrogen is a risk factor for breast cancer. There's concern about use of birth control pills and post-menopausal hormones, and it's impact on breast cancer risk. (Note: There are definitely nutritional options for menopausal concerns).

There are more and more studies linking pancreatic cancer to high sugar intake. A sugary drink 2 times daily was linked to a 70% greater risk of pancreatic cancer.

Some spring seasonal foods that help with detoxification and cancer prevention:

Artichoke detoxifies by purifying and protecting the liver, and has a diuretic effect on the kidney.

Asparagus detoxifies with its diuretic effect and helps maintain healthy bacteria in the intestines.

Fennel detoxifies with its strong diuretic effect.

Garlic boosts the immune system and is a strong anti-infective. Try the beautiful sprigs of spring green garlic, only available this time of year. It's great to eat it raw in salads, sautéed lightly with vegetables, or grilled with salmon.

OK, allow me to present a Spring challenge: Create a detoxifying meal with these spring treats, all at one meal!
